How to use Twitter for your Business
0
The market is constantly changing. You will find that things that worked for you before no longer do. So you must keep tabs on your market, and adapt.
Twitter is a great tool for helping you do just that. Research has shown that more and more people are turning to online social networking, even people 50 and above (Reuters). Beyond that, many people are connecting with brands through online networking (eMarketer).
What does this mean for you? It means you cannot ignore online networking as a means of reaching your market. But, you already knew that, right? You’re probably wondering, “Where should I go?”, “Which network should I use?”, and “How do I use it?”
Well, if you ever wondered about Twitter, hopefully this article will help you decide whether Twitter is for you. First, go to search.twitter.com. Do a preliminary search for keywords or phrases that pertain to your industry (self-help, public speaking, life purpose, whatever). What are people saying about your topic?
Next, consider the characteristics of Twitter and its users.
Twitter is fast-paced. You might say Twitter is Facebook on ADHD. It has a VAST number of users. So depending on how many people you’re following, posts could come and go like greased lightning. Some find this discouraging, but read below, there’s plenty of solutions.
Messages are very short and to the point. The maximum length of a tweet is 140 characters. Some refer to this as mini-blogging. And while it will never replace blogging, it allows you to get in there, say your piece, and get out without having to spend lots of time agonizing over content. BUT, if you’re loquacious, you’ll have to be creative about how you say what you want to.
Posting is real-time. As soon as you or someone else posts, that post is made live to everyone in the Twitter community, and anywhere your feed may be posted.
Users are listable. This means you can follow as many people as you want. But if you follow a lot of people, and want to follow just a few, you can categorize them into lists. It’s a great way to clear the clutter, and zero in on the people you want.
How do I use Twitter?
For me, it depends on the type of site and product. Most often, I use it like a news feed, and embed the feed on my site. Anyone following me on Twitter, or visiting my site(s) will see recent updates pertinent to the topic of my site. What’s the value? Well, first, people see what I’m all about in a glance. Second, I do the work of “weeding out” bad or unintresting articles so my followers don’t get bogged down with useless information.
On some sites I also use the news feed to recommend products that I am promoting. Sometimes I do this in a general manner, other times I feel the pulse of real-time tweets, and recommend my products to specific users. You can’t understimate the power of talking to people around the country in real-time. Another value is that when people visit my site, they are also presented with my offerings and see that I am actively engaged in my community.
When listing people, I have two main categories: People to whom I can market to, and People from whom I can learn. The first is for obvious reasons. The latter keeps me up-to-date, ever learning, and ahead of the game for my clients. Hey, I owe it to my clients, and to my own business! how to use Twitter for your business
Social conversations. Ask yourself, Who doesn’t like eavesdropping? Who doesn’t have an opinion? Twitter’s a great way to start some buzz about a topic. Or, join someone else’s buzz. While people are clicking around, they will see your ID on other people’s feeds, and may become curious. What’s that translate into? More traffic for you!!
Why is Twitter so great? how to use Twitter for your business
1) It allows you to constantly be in front of your market’s faces with marketing nuggets or networking.
2) You can recommend products, and people don’t feel threatened, because of the relationship of trust you’ve built.
3) There are plenty of tools out there to let you manage your tweets and time wisely (Tweet while you sleep!)
4) It is a real-time tool that let’s you see what is going on in the world and market — right now. how to use Twitter for your business
Rats! Judged again…
0
I recently read an interesting article on BNET called Competent Looking CEOs Earn More, But Perform No Better. The title says enough, I should think… but to recap, a study was done by Duke University in which top-level execs were given anonymous photos of individuals, and asked to judge each person’s “appearance of competence”. rates for websites
While that doesn’t seem fair, it taps into a part of the human psyche that’s important to be aware of. In the realm of online business, I wondered, “How are websites judged?” I did a quick search for sites explaining how to judge a good website from a bad website. Funny thing is, most of the top hits were on sites I would classify as ‘bad sites’. So, who made them the authority? rates for websites
I’m sure you’ve seen some heinous websites out there. You know the ones — poor graphics (or NO graphics), outdated coding, broken links, misspelled words, covered with so many ads you don’t know where to find the real content… The list goes on. If you’re like me (and many other people), you see this kind of website and immediately hit the back button. going rate for website design
But here’s the rub: going rate for website design
Many of these ‘poor quality’ websites do fantastically well making their owners large sums of cash. This annoys me, but it’s a fact that cannot be ignored! But it’s also a fact that people judge books by their cover. People will judge (for good or bad) your website.
The question you really want to ask yourself is:

“What are the kinds of people I want to attract?” This is important. You should know who your target market is, and should be prepared to draw them in with your first impression — which is oftentimes your website. And this means “appearance of competence”. If you want to attract a more professional crowd, you should have a more professional appearance. If you want a fun crowd – fun appearance, and so on. how to rate a website
That said, don’t let this stop you. If you’re looking to start an online business, or get your business online, and don’t quite have the budget for a website you want — DON’T WAIT. Waiting is a #1 killer. Instead, have a plan. Check out our article: Guide to website planning to get your plan started. As those other websites have attested, you can be successful without your site being perfect. how to rate a website
The moral of the story is — reach out to your target audience, and do it effectively.
How to Create a Fan Community
2The following is a great presentation given by Spike Jones. He covers 10 characteristics of ‘Movements’ (fads that never die). While you may not be trying to ignite a movement, he gives some useful insight into HOW to approach your community and future prospects. Some of these characteristics are:
1. Find what people are passionate about. It’s not about the product, it’s about people do with the product.
2. Movements have inspirational leadership – passion can’t be created, but influence can. Talk to people. Listen to what they say. Create what they want.
3. Movements have powerful identities – we all want to be bigger than we are: religion, sports teams, even brands.

How to use an RSS blog reader?
5
We’d like to introduce you to one of those cool networking tools out there that will help you with your blogging, education, and networking efforts. This may seem like a very basic concept, but our motto is “one step at a time”, and we’d like to express the importance of setting this tool up: if you haven’t done so already, now would be a good time.
What is this nifty little tool? An RSS* blog reader, online blog reader, or RSS feed reader.
What is a blog reader? A blog reader is an organizer for all your favorite blogs. It allows you to collect RSS feeds from all over, into one place, and administer them as you like. You can often group them by name or class, choose to receive email digests, bookmark your favorites, and more.
Readers are provided by many different sites out there, such as: Bloglines, Google Reader, NewsGator, SharpReader, NetNewsWire, or RSS Bandit. (Google Reader is the best RSS feed reader for us). Again, if you don’t yet have a reader, take some time this week to get one started — you’ll be glad you did.
How to use your reader for blogging. Coming up with content is always on the mind of a blogger, and often a struggle. Keeping up to date on blogs related to your industry can give you fresh ideas of what to write on your own. Don’t copy others, but if you have your own fresh take on a subject, or notice something they missed, write about it!
How to use your reader for networking. Networking** is a great way to take part in your online community, and drive traffic to your own website. Find blogs that interest you — news, music, religion, yoga — it doesn’t have to be in your industry, just things that interest you. Comment on other people’s blogs. Take part in discussions. Thumbs up or down others’ comments. A web RSS reader gives you quick access.
How to use your reader for education. The web is abundant with free information and education. We suggest you create a section in your reader of blogs written by the leaders of your industry. This helps you stay ahead of the game, and (most important) continue to provide value to your customers.

Everyone wants to have a successful website. Successful entrepreneurship often depends on building an effective website, especially for those with a strictly online business.
To create a successful website for yourself, you must first define ‘success’. To have a successful website, you must decide how you intend to use it. Below are the most basic purposes a website can be used for.
1. Placeholder. This is the most basic use of a website. A placeholder gives your business a domain name, email addresses, and conveys basic information about your company such as contact information, and location. This may be useful for certain kinds of businesses, but is becoming used less frequently.
2. Marketing tool. This the most common use of websites, currently. Successful website marketing contains many aspects (such as the Interrupt and Call to Action*), which we will cover in later articles. But consider the benefits of a website. It is available 24/7. It is accessible from anywhere in the world. It can be used to convey information (as a Placeholder), but it can also be used to communicate your higher values, evoke emotions, and engender trust.
3. Sales tool. Sales and marketing sometimes get confused. The difference is that sales includes the exchange of goods and services for money. This requires some technical advances in your site such as merchant account, and merchant gateway. It may seem like a scary step, but it seems a shame to have nationwide exposure, and nationwide traffic coming to your site, and to not turn it into cash flow.
Don’t wait! The beauty of having a website is that you can choose your level of commitment. You can also get started at one level, and gradually grow your site to include more and more features. For instance, if you have few resources at your disposal, start with your site as a “Placeholder”.
Next, as your message becomes clear, you can mature your site, and use it as a “Marketing tool.” From there, it seems a natural progression to offer products and services accessible to all. But as we say, take a step at a time. Be deliberate, and take the right steps. We’re here to help.
Stay tuned, as we share more on how to create effective content, maximize your SEO, and more.
Happy Planning!
